Ed St. John

If you've read anything of "American Dreams", you've got the jist of Ed St. John.  He's quiet, burly, and a hell of a bad influence on the youth.  And yet the entire series started with him.  I wanted to create a guy that was a deus ex machina to the main character.  No matter how fucked you were, Ed would be there to dust off your back and break the teeth of those who harmed you.  But I also wanted to make him the biggest piece of shit when he spoke.  Racist, anti-Semitic, this bastard would be hard to root for if you got to know him.
Nicole Cuvin has an amazing blog you oughta check out sometime.  It's called The Weekly Lowlight, and as a title like that suggests, she's just as bleak as me and "American Dreams".  Here's an incredible portrait of Ed St. John by her, exactly as he should be.

Leave your gods at home.  Believe in him.
